| | BWJP Launches New Military-Related Legal Technical Assistance Project and Listserv
The Battered Women’s Justice Project (BWJP) has been funded by the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women to assist attorneys and advocates working on civil legal cases involving military-related survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). BWJP provides webinars for advocates and attorneys, and moderates a listserv where those providing advocacy or representation to military-related clients may share best practices, receive practical advice, and connect with others doing this work. BWJP is also developing a resource manual for attorneys and advocates.
BWJP's consultant on this project is Ellen C. Schell, Esq., who is Counsel, and Director of the Military Families Program, at The Legal Project in Albany, New York. The Legal Project, which provides legal advice, information, and representation to survivors of IPV, developed its Military Families Program in 2009, with funding through a federal appropriation. Ellen has developed training for attorneys and advocates, in addition to providing technical assistance, about the unique legal needs of military-related clients, and how to deal with those aspects of a civil case.
Ellen Schell is the moderator for the listserv and is available to provide technical assistance. She can be reached via email at eschell@legalproject.org or by phone at 1-518-435-1770.
