In our work to address domestic and sexual violence, it’s easy to overlook the most fundamental fact: offenders benefit from their use of violence. This webinar describes exactly what’s in it for offenders to continue with their abuse, what they gain from every tactic, and why those tactics work so well again and again. As practitioners, how we think about the intent and effect of the offender’s abuse directly impacts how we respond to both offenders and victims. With a shared understanding of the functionality of the abuse, we enhance our abilities to hold offenders accountable and provide effective assistance to survivors. Chuck Derry has a unique way of relating men’s use of violence to our understanding of how self-interest motivates human behavior and how violence and other abusive tactics are powerful tools for getting what one wants.
