In an attempt to enhance the safety of those victimized by offenders, probation officers are increasingly interacting with those victimized. This session addresses signs of secondary trauma that could result from hearing traumatic stories. Suggestions for dealing with our own trauma and that of the person who was victimized is discussed. Ways to help a traumatized individual and empower them are also examined. Historical roles of probation/parole interviews are examined to see how these practices may endanger those who have been victimized. Finally, some practical policies and interviewing skills are discussed.
